Three-Stage Examination Architecture & Syllabus Structure

Stage-I: Preliminary Examination (Objective OMR - 400 Marks):

• Paper-I: General Studies-I (100 Questions | 200 Marks | 2 Hours): Current events of national and international importance, History of India and Indian National Movement, Indian and World Geography, Indian Polity and Governance, Economic and Social Development, General issues on Environmental Ecology, Bio-diversity and Climate Change, General Science. (Determines cutoff for Mains qualification).
• Paper-II: Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT) (80 Questions | 200 Marks | 2 Hours): Comprehension, Interpersonal skills including communication skills, Logical reasoning and analytical ability, Decision-making and problem-solving, General mental ability, Basic numeracy (Class 10 level). (Qualifying paper: Minimum 33% / 66 Marks required).

Stage-II: Main Examination (Written Descriptive - 9 Papers / 1,750 Marks):

• Qualifying Papers (300 Marks Each - Minimum 25% required):
• - Paper-A: One Indian Language from the 8th Schedule of the Constitution.
• - Paper-B: English Language.
• Papers Counted for Merit Ranking (250 Marks Each - Total 1,750 Marks):
• - Paper-I: Essay (2 Essays chosen from diverse philosophical, social, and economic themes).
• - Paper-II (GS-I): Indian Heritage and Culture, History and Geography of the World and Society.
• - Paper-III (GS-II): Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice and International Relations.
• - Paper-IV (GS-III): Technology, Economic Development, Bio-diversity, Environment, Security and Disaster Management.
• - Paper-V (GS-IV): Ethics, Integrity, and Aptitude (Case Studies & Moral Philosophies).
• - Paper-VI & VII (Optional Subject Paper 1 & 2): Candidate's chosen specialization (History, Geography, PSIR, Sociology, Public Administration, Anthropology, Law, Literature, etc. - 250 Marks each = 500 Marks).

Stage-III: Personality Test / Interview (275 Marks):

• Conducted at UPSC Dholpur House, New Delhi by a board of seasoned administrators, diplomats, and academicians.
• Total Final Merit Computation: 2,025 Marks (1,750 Marks Mains + 275 Marks Interview).

Step-by-Step "How to Apply Online" Guide

1. Step 1: UPSC OTR Registration: Navigate to upsconline.nic.in and register your One Time Registration (OTR) profile.
2. Step 2: Fill Part-I Registration: Select Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination 2026, fill educational qualifications, residential details, and identity card details (Aadhaar / Voter ID / Passport).
3. Step 3: Upload Documents & Photograph: Upload your recent passport photograph with candidate name and date, scanned signature, and valid Photo ID card in PDF format.
4. Step 4: Examination Center Selection & Fee: Select preferred Prelims and Mains examination cities and complete online payment of ₹100 (Female/SC/ST/PwBD candidates are exempt from payment).
5. Step 5: Print Confirmation Slip: Download and securely store the Part-II registration confirmation slip.
